A simple dialogue
Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue. Write it out and perform it.
- What is the matter? Are you okay?
- I feel sad, I don’t know why.
- Do you want a cup of tea?
- Yes please. I am thirsty. This tea is very nice.
- Do you sleep well?
- No. I am worried about my work and my family, and I think about my problems at night.
- Are you tired now?
- I really need to sleep.
- I have some good soup here. Would you like some soup and a sandwich?
- Yes. I am very hungry.
- Your family is healthy, and they are all good people. You have a job.
- You are right. I need to look after myself.
- Please remember, we all love you. I want to help you more.

In its most basic form, tener means to have or to possess.
- Yo tengo un perro = I have a dog
- Ellos tienen un coche nuevo = They have a new car
However, tener is also used in many phrases where English speakers might use to be or other verbs.
In Spanish, you have a certain number of years rather than being a certain age.
- Tengo veinticinco años = I am twenty-five years old
To express being hot or cold, use tener.
- Tengo calor = I am hot
- Ella tiene frío = She is cold
Instead of being hungry or being thirsty, you have hunger or have thirst in Spanish.
- Tenemos hambre = We are hungry
- Tú tienes sed = You are thirsty
When you feel tired, you use tener to express that you have sleepiness. When you are scared, you have fear. When you are in a hurry, you have haste. When you are right, you have reason.
- Tengo sueño = I am sleepy
- Los niños tienen miedo de la oscuridad = The children are afraid of the dark
- Tener prisa = To be in a hurry
- Tener razón = To be right

Write short sentences. Keep them as simple as you can.
Use a translation tool to put them into Spanish.
Write them out, then check them with your teacher. Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!
