A simple dialogue

Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue.  Write it out and perform it.

• I need to do the shopping.  Do you want anything?
• Can you get some strawberries please?
• If they are nice I will buy some.  How many do you want?
• I would like half a kilo.
• Is that everything?  Do we have bread?
• I don’t know, but I don’t want bread …
• Can you look in the fridge?
• There is no bread in the fridge.
• Where are the bags?  Where is my purse?
• Your purse is here and I think I know where the bags are.  I will look for them … yes!  Here you are!
• Thank you.  I have my phone with me, so if you think of anything else you want …
• I will send you a message.  Perfect!  See you soon!

Use these phrases to translate the dialogue.

Tener que + infinitive verb

• Tengo que estudiar – I have to study
• Tienes que trabajar mañana – You have to work tomorrow
• Él tiene que ir al médico – He has to go to the doctor
• Nosotros tenemos que hacer la compra – We have to do the shopping
• Vosotros tenéis que ir al colegio – You have to go to school
• Ellos tienen que limpiar la casa – They have to clean the house

Numbers to 199

• Diez – Ten
• Veinte – Twenty
• Treinta – Thirty
• Cuarenta – Forty
• Cincuenta – Fifty
• Sesenta – Sixty
• Setenta – Seventy
• Ochenta – Eighty
• Noventa – Ninety
• Cien – A hundred
• Ciento uno – A hundred and one

For numbers between 100 and 199, use ciento + the number.  When it’s 101, you use ciento uno (note that uno changes to un before masculine nouns).  For 21-29, you use veinti followed by the number (e.g., veintiuno, veintidós, etc.).  Ciento becomes just cien when you say exactly 100.

How much, how many?

• Cuánto – masculine singular.  ¿Cuánto dinero? – How much money?
• Cuánta – feminine singular.  ¿Cuánta leche? – How much milk?
• Cuántos – masculine plural.  ¿Cuántos libros? – How many books?
• Cuántas – feminine plural.  ¿Cuántas personas? – How many people?

The other question words that agree with number (but not gender) are:

• ¿Cuál?  ¿Cuáles?
• ¿Quién?  ¿Quiénes?

Write short sentences.  Keep them as simple as you can.

Use a translation tool to put them into Spanish.

Write them out, then check them with your teacher.  Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!

How often do you do the shopping? How much do you think your household spends on groceries per week? Who do you buy food for?  And who buys food for you?

¿Con qué frecuencia haces las compras? ¿Cuánto cree que gasta su hogar en comida por semana? ¿Para quién compras comida?  ¿Y quién te compra comida?
