A simple dialogue
Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue. Write it out and perform it.
- When are you going to be in Spain?
- I arrive in Madrid tomorrow afternoon.
- What plans do you have?
- I would like to visit the gardens in and around the city.
- Do you know where you are going to stay?
- I have a room booked for the first two nights. After that I am going to make reservations according to where I want to be.
- So you don’t have fixed plans yet?
- I want to have flexibility so if I meet friends I can do what they want to do.
- That sounds good. One thing I recommend while you are in Madrid is a visit to the Templo de Debod. The best time to visit is sunrise or sunset. Thank you. This is going to be a great vacation!!

Going to do something
The going to future in Spanish is formed as follows:
- Form of ir (to go) + a + infinitive (the action you will do)
In English, this construction translates to “going to do something.”
The verb ir
Yo voy – I am going
Tú vas – You are going
Él/Ella/Usted va – He/She/You formal are going
Nosotros/as vamos – We are going
Vosotros/as vais – You all are going – used in Spain
Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes van – They/You all are going
Examples
Mañana voy a viajar a México – I am going to travel to Mexico
- Vamos a visitar a nuestros padres – We are going to visit our parents
- Ella va a viajar en avión – She is going to travel by plane
- Voy a estudiar esta noche – I am going to study tonight
- ¿Vas a salir este fin de semana? – Are you going to go out this weekend?
This “going to” future tense is especially useful when talking about plans or intentions and is one of the most common ways to express future actions in Spanish.
It is easy to form this structure by remembering the three elements it requires.

Write them out, then check them with your teacher. Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!
