Grammar notes
* Read this information, then use it to quiz a friend.
Ninguno/ ninguna/ ningunos/ ningunas (none, not any, or no one); nadie = no one; and the word “no”.
When ninguno or nadie comes after the verb, put “no” in front of the verb.
- Yo no tengo ninguno de esos libros. = I do not have any of those books.
- Él no compró ninguna camisa. = He did not buy any shirts.
- Ella no quiere hablar con nadie. = She doesn’t want to talk to anyone.
If ninguno or nadie comes before the verb, you do not need to add “no”.
- Ninguno de nosotros quiere ir de compras. = None of us want to go shopping.
- Ninguna de las camisas me gusta. = I don’t like any of the shirts.
- Nadie tiene dinero. = No one has money.
In Spanish, when a negative word follows the verb, we also need to make the verb negative. This differs from English, where double negatives are usually avoided.
Some Spanish words drop the final -o in front of a masculine singular noun.
- Uno = One.
- Un libro = One book.
- Uno de los libros = One of the books.
- Alguno = Some/ any.
- Algún día = Some day.
- ¿Tienes algún amigo aquí? = Do you have any friends here?
- Alguno de ellos = Some of them.
- Ninguno = None/ no.
- Ningún problema = No problem.
- Ninguno de ellos = None of them.
- Primero = First.
- El primer piso = The first floor.
- Primero is used in short answers: El primero = The first.
- Tercero = Third.
- El tercer libro = The third book.
- Tercero is used in short answers: El tercero = The third.
Segundo = Second, and doesn’t drop its -o in front of a masculine singular noun. Of the ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.) it is just primero and tercero that drop the -o.
