A simple dialogue
Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue. Write it out and perform it.
- What is the weather like where you live?
- I live at a high latitude, so the days are very light in summer and very dark in winter.
- Is it very cold in December?
- Not really, because we are an island. It is cold, yes, but only minus five celcius.
- What is that in farenheit?
- Twenty three degrees. And it only snows a lot every ten years or so. A lot of snow is unusual.
- Do you get a lot of sun in summer?
- I live in the east of the United Kingdom, in one of the driest regions. We have a lot of sunny days.
- Like Spain?
- No! I think it rains much more here than it does in Spain!

In Spanish, the verb “hacer” (in its form “hace”) is commonly used to describe the weather.
| Hace calor – It’s hot. | Hace frío – It’s cold. |
| Hace sol – It’s sunny. | Hace mal tiempo – It’s bad weather |
You can modify these phrases with words like mucho (a lot/very) or poco (a little).
| Hace mucho calor – It’s very hot. | Hace poco sol – There’s not much sun. |
Sometimes, “hay” is used instead of “hace,” but only for describing specific types of weather.
Hay – There is/ there are. Hace – It does/ it makes.

| Hay nubes – There are clouds. |
| Hay viento – It’s windy. |
