A simple dialogue
Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue. Write it out and perform it.
- I have to go to the train station early tomorrow morning.
- What time do you have to be there?
- My train leaves at ten past nine.
- You can take bus number thirty six.
- Where is the bus stop?
- Go out of the hotel and turn right.
- Continue on that street to the end.
- At the end, turn left.
- There is are two bus stops. You need the second one.
- How long does the bus take to get to the station?
- It only takes about ten minutes.
- There is a bus every ten minutes.
- I am going to leave at ten past eight because I am going to have a light breakfast at the station.
- Good idea. Have a safe journey.
Use these phrases to translate the dialogue.

Giving directions with formal and informal commands
Commands (imperatives) in Spanish are used to give orders, advice, or instructions.
Informal commands
Used when speaking to someone you know well (friends, family, peers).
To form the affirmative tú command, use the third-person singular form of the verb (él/ella/usted) in the present tense.
- Hablar → Habla (Speak)
- Girar → Gira (Turn)
- Seguir → Sigue (Follow)
Formal commands: Used when addressing strangers, elders, or in professional settings.
To form affirmative (and negative) formal commands, use the subjunctive form of the verb. Start with the yo form of the present tense. Remove the -o ending. Add the opposite ending, so the final vowel changes. For -ar verbs, use -er/-ir endings. For -er/-ir verbs, use
-ar endings.

Journal prompts
Write short sentences. Keep them as simple as you can.
Use a translation tool to put them into Spanish.
Write them out, then check them with your teacher. Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!
