Giving orders

In Spanish, positive commands are used to tell someone to do something. The way these commands are formed depends on whether you’re addressing someone informally (tú) or formally (usted).

For tú commands, the conjugation is the same as the third-person singular (él/ella/usted) form of the present tense for regular verbs.

For usted commands, the conjugation is the same as the third-person singular (él/ella/usted) form of the present subjunctive.  To do this, you start with the yo form of the verb in the present tense.  Remove the -o ending.  Add the opposite vowel ending:

  • For -ar verbs: add -e.
  • For -er/-ir verbs: add -a.

If the verb is combined with a pronoun, such as me, te, lo, or la, an accent is added to maintain the original stress of the command.

Examples

  • ¡Levántate ahora mismo! – Get up right now!
  • Siéntate aquí junto a mí. – Sit down here next to me.
  • Corta el césped. – Cut the grass.
  • Límpiala bien, está muy sucia. – Clean it well, it’s very dirty.
  • Lleva las cajas al garaje. – Take the boxes to the garage.
  • Tráeme otro, este está roto. – Bring me another one, this one is broken.

Usted

  • Por favor, levántese del asiento. – Please, get up from the seat.
  • Siéntese mientras espera su turno. – Sit down while you wait for your turn.
  • Corte el césped del jardín, por favor. – Cut the grass in the garden, please.
  • Por favor, límpiela con este producto. – Please clean it with this product.
  • Por favor, llévelas a la oficina. – Please take them to the office.
  • Por favor, tráigame otro de mejor calidad. – Please bring me another one of better quality.
