Reflexive verbs
Reflexive verbs end with the letters -se, for example lavarse (to get washed), vestirse (to get dressed), and quedarse (to stay). There are five reflexive pronouns, which need to match the subject and be placed correctly.
Reflexive pronouns
| Me (yo) | Nos (nosotros) |
| Te (tú) | Os (vosotros) |
| Se (él, ella, usted) | Se (ellos, ellas, ustedes) |
Placement of reflexive pronouns
When reflexive verbs are conjugated in the present tense, the reflexive pronouns go in front of the verb.
- Me lavo = I get washed
- Te lavas = You get washed
- Él se lava = He gets washed
When reflexive verbs are used with an infinitive the reflexive pronoun can be attached to the end of the infinitive, or place in front of the conjugated verb. Both forms are correct!
- Me levanto = I get up
- Voy a levantarme temprano = I am going to get up early (often preferred)
- Me voy a levantar temprano = I am going to get up early (sounds more formal or deliberate)
Other examples of verbs that take infinitives that have been covered in the course so far include gustar (to like), poder (to be able to), tener que (to have to), and querer (to want to). Used with reflexive verbs they can look like this:
- Me gusta quedarme en un hotel = I like to stay in a hotel.
- Ella no puede quedarse mucho tiempo = She can’t stay for a long time.
- Nos tenemos que relajarnos más = We have to relax more.
- ¿Quieres ducharte ahora? = Do you want to have a shower now?
