Using direct object pronouns
Direct object pronouns are used to replace nouns. This avoids repetition. We don’t have to say, “The car is great. I want the car.” We can say, “The car is great. I want it.” This happens in Spanish and English.
Spanish direct object pronouns
| English pronoun | Spanish pronoun | English example | Spanish example |
| It | Lo | I want it. (The cake) | Lo quiero. (El pastel) |
| La | I need it. (The jacket) | La necesito. (La chaqueta) | |
| Them | Los | I don’t have them. (The shoes) | No los tengo. (Los zapatos) |
| Las | She doesn’t eat them. (The fries) | No las come. (Las patatas fritas) |
How to use direct object pronouns
Direct object pronouns usually go immediately in front of the conjugated verb. This often means a change in word order.
- Identify the noun you want to replace. Decide on its number and gender.
- Replace the noun with the correct pronoun.
Example
- I want to buy the cake = Quiero comprar el pastel.
- I want to buy it = Lo quiero comprar.
Match the English and Spanish sentences
The dress is pretty, but I’m not buying it.
I don’t like the purse and I don’t want it.
I have many shoes and I wear them all.
She is buying the blouses because she needs them.
El vestido es bonito, pero no lo compro.
Ella compra las blusas porque las necesita.
No me gusta la cartera y no la quiero.
Tengo muchos zapatos y los uso todos.
