A simple dialogue

Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue.  Write it out and perform it.

  • What time do you get up?
  • I wake up at quarter past six in the morning.  I don’t always get up straight away though.
  • And what does your little brother do?
  • Oh, he doesn’t get up before eight o’ clock … and he has to leave the house at ten past eight!
  • That’s not good!  Does he have breakfast?
  • He normally has something on his way out … bread or biscuits or something like that.
  • But he doesn’t shower, or brush his teeth?
  • No, he doesn’t have time.  He just gets dressed and goes.  I like more time.  I meditate, I have breakfast, I brush my hair, I wash my face … I take my time.  I like it like that.
  • Me too!

Use these phrases to translate the dialogue.

¡Eso no es bueno!  ¿Desayuna?

¡Yo también!

¿A qué hora te levantas?

Reflexive verbs

A reflexive verb is used when the subject performs an action on themselves, and they are much more common in Spanish.  In English we often say “get” instead, for example, get dressed, get up, get angry (but we don’t always use “get” in this way).  Reflexive verbs have reflexive pronouns that correspond to the subject.

SubjectReflexive pronounExample (lavarse – to get washed)
YoMeMe lavo – I get washed
TeTe lavas – You get washed
Él/ Ella/ UstedSeSe lava – He/ She/ You get washed
NosotrosNosNos lavamos – We get washed
VosotrosOsOs laváis – You get washed
Ellos/ Ellas/ UstedesSeSe lavan – They/ You get washed

Examples

  • Yo me levanto a las seis – I get up at six
  • Ella se ducha por la mañana – She showers in the morning
  • Nos vestimos rápidamente – We get dressed quickly

Some verbs, like tomarse (to take for oneself, e.g., me tomo mi tiempo), are reflexive to indicate a personal involvement in the action.

Definite articles

In Spanish, definite articles (el, la, los, las) are used instead of possessive adjectives (mi, tu, su) when referring to body parts or personal items in reflexive contexts.  This differs from English, where we typically use possessive adjectives like “my” or “your.”

Examples

  • Yo me lavo la cara – I wash my face
  • Él se cepilla los dientes – He brushes his teeth
  • Nos peinamos el pelo – We brush our hair.
  • Me corto las uñas cada semana – I cut my nails every week
  • Después de comer, me limpio las manos – After eating, I clean my hands
  • Cuando hace frío, me pongo el abrigo – When it’s cold, I put on my coat

GUSTAR IS NOT A REFLEXIVE VERB. GUSTAR TAKES ME, TE, LE, NOS, OS, LES PRONOUNS.
