REFLEXIVE VERBS
Reflexive verbs indicate that the subject is performing the action on itself. The infinitive has the letters -se on the end:
- Llamarse = To be called (to call oneself)
- Hacerse = To become (to make oneself)
- Divertirse = To have fun (to enjoy oneself)
Reflexive pronouns are always used with these verbs and must agree with the subject. The verb is conjugated in the normal way, with the ending to match the pronoun. Just as with non-reflexive Spanish verbs, they may be -ar, -er, or -ir verbs, and they may be regular or irregular.
| Pronoun | + reflexive pronoun | Example |
| Yo | me | Yo me siento cansado. = I feel tired. |
| Tú | te | Tú te sientes feliz. = You feel happy. |
| Él/ ella/ usted | se | Él/Ella se siente triste. = He/She feels sad. |
| Nosotros | nos | Nosotros nos sentimos bien. = We feel good. |
| Vosotros | os | Vosotros os sentís nerviosos. = You all feel nervous. |
| Ellos/ ellas/ ustedes | se | Ellos se sienten enfermos. = They feel sick. |
Not every verb is reflexive, but certain verbs like llamarse (to be called), sentirse (to feel), and levantarse (to get up) are commonly reflexive. Many actions that require reflexive verbs in Spanish don’t need reflexive pronouns in English.
- English: I get up at seven.
- Spanish: Me levanto a las siete.
