DAYS OF THE WEEK
In Spanish we don’t say “on Tuesday”; we say “the Tuesday” There is a Spanish word that means “on”: it is “en”. It simply isn’t used in this expression. Days of the week don’t take a capital letter when they are in the middle of a sentence in Spanish.
- On Tuesday = El martes
- On Sunday = El domingo
- On Mondays = Los lunes
- On Saturdays = Los sábados
All the days of the week are masculine, as is the word for day: el día.
The weekend = El fin de semana, in most Spanish-speaking countries. Again, we don’t use the word “en”, but we use “el” or “los”.
- Voy a la fiesta el fin de semana = I am going to the party at the weekend.
- Salgo con mis amigos los fines de semana = I go out with my friends on/ at the weekend.
USING SER
Spanish students have to learn when to use ser or estar to translate to be.
Ser is used to express days and dates because they are seen as something that doesn’t change. Ser = To be. Soy = I am. Eres = You are. Es = He is/ she is/ it is/ you are.
- Hoy es viernes.
We use ser to talk about when and where an event will take place, as these are seen as inherent characteristics of the event itself.
- El partido es el sábado.
When you describe what an event is like, you also use ser, because you are talking about an inherent quality of the event.
- El concierto es divertido.
