DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS
A direct object is the person or thing that directly receives the action of the verb. In English, it’s often the who or what that the verb affects. For example, in the sentence “I see Anna”, Anna is the direct object.
Direct Object Pronouns (DOPs) are used to replace direct objects in order to avoid repetition. Instead of saying “I see Anna” and using the proper noun, we use a pronoun like “I see you” (Te veo).
Here are the Spanish DOPs:
| Singular | Plural |
| me (me) | nos (us) |
| te (you – familiar) | os (you all – familiar, Spain) |
| lo (him, it, you – masculine) la (her, it, you – feminine) | los (them – masculine) las (them – feminine) |
Direct object pronouns are usually placed before the conjugated verb (or attached to the end of an infinitive verb or a gerund, which we will study later).
EXAMPLES
- Siempre te llamo = I always call you
- Nunca me escucha = He/she never listens to me
- Yo creo que nos necesitan = I think that they need us
- Me compra pasteles = He/she buys me cakes
PRONOUNS, PRONOUNS, PRONOUNS
There are many types of pronoun. It is good to study just one set at a time. Some of the main types of pronoun are listed below (but there are more than this!)
Subject pronouns refer to who or what is doing the action. You know these words in Spanish: yo, tú, él, ella, usted, nosotros, vosotros, ellos, ellas, ustedes.
Reflexive pronouns are used with reflexive verbs, for example, to get up = levantarse. Me levanto, te levantas, se levanta, nos levantamos, os levantáis, se levantan.
Indirect object pronouns are something we will learn about later. These words are used with verbs like gustar. Me gusta, te gusta, le gusta, nos gusta, os gusta, les gusta.
