A simple dialogue

Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue.  Write it out and perform it.

• Do you want to go shopping with me?
• Yes.  I need to buy a dress and a hat!
• Good.  I need to buy a shirt, a skirt and some elegant shoes.
• This is a good shop.  This is a lovely dress.
• This skirt is too expensive.  Oh, it is too big too.
• Do you like this skirt?
• Yes, that is very pretty.  I want to try on this skirt.
• Where is the fitting room?
• The skirt is a good size. 
• Do you want to buy the skirt?
• Can I pay with a credit card?
• Of course. 
• I want to buy this dress.  Can I pay with cash?
• Yes you can! Here you are, eighteen dollars.

Use these phrases to translate the dialogue.

FOR IN SPANISH

There are two words that mean for in Spanish: para and por.  Understanding when to use each one can be tricky because they are used in many different contexts.  You already know some common phrases, such as por favor (please), por la mañana (in the morning), and ¿por qué? (why?).  Now learn a little bit about para, and some more about por.

PARA

When we say who something is for, we use para.

• Para mí — for me
• Para ti — for you (informal)
• Para él/ella/usted — for him/her/you (formal)
• Para nosotros/nosotras — for us (masculine/feminine)
• Para vosotros/vosotras — for you all (informal in Spain, masculine/feminine)
• Para ellos/ellas/ustedes — for them/you all (formal in Latin America)

We can use para with one of the pronouns above, or with a noun.

• Este sombrero es para mí = This hat is for me
• La falda es para ti = The skirt is for you
• Este jersey es para él = This jersey is for him
• Los zapatos son para mi mamá = The shoes are for my mom
• Este regalo es para Juan = This gift is for Juan

POR

When you’re thanking someone for something specific, use por.

• Gracias por la camiseta = Thanks for the t-shirt
• Gracias por el dinero = Thanks for the money

Write short sentences.  Keep them as simple as you can.

Use a translation tool to put them into Spanish.

Write them out, then check them with your teacher.  Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!

Do you go shopping for clothes every month? Think about your friends and family.  Who goes shopping more than you? What is more fun than shopping, for you?  What is less fun?
