A simple dialogue
Use the Spanish phrases to translate the English dialogue. Write it out and perform it.
- What is your home like?
- It is a small house with a big kitchen.
- How many bedrooms do you have?
- There are three bedrooms, but I use the little bedroom as an office because I work from home.
- Where do you live?
- Do you know Hampeth? It is a small village near Newmarket.
- Oh! The houses there are lovely, with big, beautiful gardens.
- That’s right. How about you? What’s your home like?
- I live in a small apartment, on the second floor. I don’t have a garden, but I do have a lovely sunny balcony.
- That sounds great.
- You have to come and visit one day. We can have a cup of coffee on the balcony.
Use these phrases to translate the dialogue.
¡Oh! Las casas allí son preciosas, con grandes y bonitos jardines.
¿Cómo es tu casa?
¿Conoces Hampeth? Es un pequeño pueblo cerca de Newmarket.
¿Cuántas habitaciones tienes?
¿Dónde vives?
Así es. ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo es tu casa?

Eso suena genial.
Hay tres dormitorios, pero uso el dormitorio pequeño como oficina porque trabajo desde casa.
Tienes que venir a visitarme algún día. Podemos tomar una taza de café en el balcón.
Vivo en un apartamento pequeño, en el segundo piso. No tengo jardín, pero sí un hermoso balcón soleado.

HAY
The Spanish word hay is incredibly useful. It translates to there is or there are in English.
Hay + article + noun
- Hay una cama en mi dormitorio. = There is a bed in my bedroom.
- Hay dos baños en mi casa. = There are two bathrooms in my house.
- Hay un jardín y una piscina. = There is a garden and a pool.
- No hay un garaje en mi casa. = There isn’t a garage in my house.
To make the sentence negative, you simply add no before hay.
No hay = There isn’t or There aren’t.
- No hay muebles en el comedor. = There isn’t any furniture in the dining room.
When asking about the existence of things in a house, use ¿Hay…? = Is there/Are there…?
- ¿Hay un balcón? = Is there a balcony?
- ¿Hay muchas habitaciones? = Are there many rooms?
ALLÍ
Hay = There is /There are → Expresses existence of things.
Allí = There /Over there → Expresses location of things.
Allí is an adverb of place that tells you the specific location of something. It answers the question of where something is.
- La mesa está allí, al lado de la ventana. = The table is over there, next to the window.
- El sofá está allí, cerca de la puerta. = The sofa is there, near the door.
- Allí está el baño. = There is the bathroom.
USEFUL EXPRESSIONS WITH HAY
| Hay un problema = There’s a problem | No hay mucho = There isn’t much |
| No hay nada = There is nothing | No hay más = There are no more |
| Si hay tiempo = If there’s time | Hay un error = There’s a mistake |
Journal prompts
Write short sentences. Keep them as simple as you can.
Use a translation tool to put them into Spanish.
Write them out, then check them with your teacher. Present them to a friend, teaching your friend any new Spanish, and making sure they learn it!
