GUSTAR AND ENCANTAR
The verb gustar = to like, but its structure is a bit different from English. Instead of saying:
- I like something, in Spanish you say:
- something pleases me.
Me or te is the indirect object and gustar agrees with the thing that is liked. Verbs like this can be followed by a noun or an infinitive verb. Notice that we usually use el or la with nouns, although we can also use words like mi and tu (my and your).
- Me gusta leer = I like reading
- Te gusta estudiar = You like studying
To make it negative, simply add no before me or te.
- No me gusta el café = I don’t like coffee
- No te gusta la música = You don’t like music
For questions, just change the word order and add question marks .
- ¿Te gusta leer? = Do you like reading?
- ¿Te gusta estudiar? = Do you like studying?
The verb encantar = to love (literally, to enchant), follows the same structure as gustar.
- Me encanta el chocolate = I love chocolate
- No te encanta la música = You don’t love music
- ¿Te encanta cocinar? = Do you love cooking?
POSSESSIVE DE
Spanish doesn’t use an apostrophe-s like English. Instead, de is required to form possessive phrases.
| In English: | John’s book |
| In Spanish: | El libro de Juan (literally, the book of John) |
