CONJUGATING VERBS
Conjugating verbs in Spanish involves changing the verb form to match the subject and tense. Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their endings (-ar, -er, -ir), while irregular verbs, like “ser,” have unique conjugations that need to be memorized.
Subject pronouns are the people or things doing the action. In Spanish, the subject pronouns are:
- Yo = I
- Tú = You, informal
- Él/Ella/Usted = He/She/You, formal
- Nosotros/Nosotras = We
- Vosotros/Vosotras = You all, informal in Spain
- Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes = They/You all, formal in Spain, You all formal or informal elsewhere
Regular verbs in Spanish follow specific patterns depending on their ending (-ar, -er, or -ir). For hablar (to speak), a regular -ar verb, you would conjugate it in the present like this:
| Yo hablo = I speak | Nosotros hablamos = We speak |
| Tú hablas = You speak | Vosotros habláis = You speak |
| Él habla = He speaks Ella habla = She speaks Usted habla = You speak | Ellos hablan = They speak Ellas hablan = They speak Ustedes hablan = You speak |
Irregular verbs, like ser (to be), don’t follow regular patterns. Instead, they have unique forms that must be memorized:
| Yo soy = I am | Nosotros somos = We are |
| Tú eres = You are | Vosotros sois = You are |
| Él es = He is Ella es = She is Usted es = You are | Ellos son = They are Ellas son = They are Ustedes son = You are |
You can replace some subject pronouns with nouns as subjects.
- Juan y Miguel son de Cuba = Juan and Miguel are from Cuba
- María y yo hablamos español = Maria and I speak Spanish
