ES, ESTÁ AND ESTA

It can be confusing when there are several words that are all very similar, so let’s have a look at these three.

Es is part of the verb ser, to be.  Es can mean he is, she is, or it is.  Ser is used to describe permanent or inherent qualities.

  • Es mi amigo = He is my friend
  • El carro es negro = The car is black
  • Hoy es lunes = Today is Monday

Está is part of the verb estar, to be.  Está can mean he is, she is, or it is.  Estar is used to describe temporary states, as well as locations.

  • Mi madre está cansada = My mother is tired
  • El hotel está cerrado = The hotel is closed
  • ¿Dónde está mi dinero? = Where is my money?

The accent on the word está tells us to pronounce the last letter louder, as the stressed part of the word.

Esta without the accent means this.  The louder, stressed part of the word is the first syllable.  It is used to refer to feminine singular nouns; usually nouns that are close to the speaker.

  • Esta casa es bonita = This house is beautiful

Este also means this, and we use it when the noun is masculine singular.

  • Este libro es interesante.

Read these examples and explain why the words es, está, esta or este is used in each case.

  • Este hombre es doctor. = This man is a doctor.
  • El café está caliente. = The coffee is hot.
  • Esta casa es muy bonita = This house is very beautiful.
  • Este baño está muy sucio = This bathroom is very dirty.
