GENDER

In Spanish, all nouns have gender—either masculine or feminine. This applies to both people and objects, even though objects don’t have a gender in real life.

  • Masculine nouns often end in -o (but not always).
  • Feminine nouns often end in -a (but not always).

The definite article refers to the word “the”.  In Spanish, we can translate “the “ as “el” or “la”.

El is used for masculine nouns.

  • el niño (the boy)
  • el hombre (the man)
  • el pan (the bread)

La is used for feminine nouns.

  • la niña (the girl)
  • la mujer (the woman)
  • la manzana (the apple)

INDEFINITE ARTICLE

Indefinite article is the grammatical name for the word “a”.  In Spanish, we can translate “a” as “un” or “una”.

Un is used for masculine nouns.

  • un niño (a boy)
  • un hombre (a man)

Una is used for feminine nouns.

  • una niña (a girl)
